Eraser problem/Wacom tablet

Mar 19, 2004

Greetings!

Having a problem with my Wacom Graphire 2 tabelt. In the draw function in Photoshop CS, I cannot get the eraser function of the stylus pen to work properly. First off the brush size is real small and it doesn't erase well at all. Acts like the opacity of the eraser is set to 10%. Barely any erasing action at all. Anyone have a clue how to get this to work?

Don't have the graphire, but some things that could be wrong here. Is the image you're working on have layers? Erasing on the wrong layer?? Don't know what the 'draw function' is. How is the eraser configured in the Wacom settings from control panel - there are various settings on the intuos. Did you try to increase brush size? Can you increase the size of other brushes? Caps lock on? Answering these should help narrow the problem. There also are other threads on this - you might try searching 'wacom eraser' here.

erasure or stylus pen end?

In reply to Kent C • Mar 19, 2004

Are you refering to the stylus end of the pen or the erase end?,set stylus as you would for erase tool, but set pressure in tablet properties,if you are refering to the erase end then set this using the wacom tablet properties erasure test area, Both ends of the pen are pressure sensitive but require independant setting ,dont forget the "more options" tab----however I am talking PS7 and Wacom art pad 11---should be similar for you,get back to us if you want more.

Re: Eraser problem/Wacom tablet

Ken,I have just reread your post, when you refer to the draw function I assume you mean the pen stylus? if you do you should check in the erase options box (at the top of the screen) that you have a solid brush selected and that opacity and flow are at 100% also in the brush selection drop down (far right of options bar) has the "other dynamics" box selected and pen pressure selected as you require (or not) you can adjust the pen size from the keyboard using { for smaller } for larger, then apply appropriate .

pen pressure as previously set in my last post.Good luck. Warning--I am using Wacom artpad11 and PS7

Re: Eraser problem/Wacom tablet

The draw function I am using is the brush. However, I have used pencil and pen with the same result. The eraser part of the Wacom pen isn't working...the size of the brush is probably a #1 and it barely erases anything. Checked all the settings..opacity is 100% (although it acts like 10%), other dynamics is checked, etc. In the test area of the Wacom software, the eraser works fine. Thought this was supposed the work with Photoshop. Anything I am missing?

Forgive me if I'm being redundant here, but... have you switched to the eraser tool in ps and looked at the settings for that tool?

Another thought

In reply to maggiek • Mar 19, 2004

Do you have more than one tablet installed on this machine? When I swithed from a graphire 2 to an intuos 2 I had a similiar problem. Seems the eraser doesn't work on the second driver unless you uninstall the first driver. I finally broke down and called wacom customer support. They were very nice and solved my problem in less than a minute - after I spent hours trying to figure it out myself. If your still having problems, give them a call. good liuck.

Yes...if I use the eraser function in PS...that does work. I just thought that if one is in...let's say the brush mode, one could flip the wacom pen and erase that way...guess not?

Go into the Wacom Tablet properties in the Control Panel.

On the second box down "Applications with customized tool settings" is there a 'photoshop' icon in there. If not, click the button next to that box "add application to list..." and find photoshop.

Then click on the 'pen' icon in the next window box down - there should be a mouse and a pen, click on the pen.

Then in the tabs below those boxes, click on "tool buttons" and there you can set the functions for the pen. on the "eraser function" be sure that it is set to "erase".

Then click on "Eraser Feel" tab - set the pressure feel there, try it out on the 'erase here' box. Apply. OK. Open up PS. If it doesn't work get the wacom tech on line because it should.

Kent,

I have tried your recommendations. When I add Photoshop to the list in the Wacom Tablet as you indicted, in PS then, the eraser actually "paints" and doesn't erase at all. Wonder if something is wrong with PS CS?? According to Wacom, it should work. How many other folks are having the same problem??

Ken, I have the Graphire 3 and the eraser works fine in PSCS. Try clicking on the Shift key and the greater than > key to see if the eraser size changes when you are in the brush mode. After you have done this, use the open and closed brackets to change the size of the eraser size.

Marcia,

You are right! I tried it in PhotoImpact 8.5 and it worked perfectly. I guess we acutally found a clitch in Photoshop! I'll contact them at some point to see what they say. Can't believe many other folks haven't notice this. Maybe they have the Graphire 3 or other versions of tablets.
Well, at least I feel somewhat better it wasn't operator error.

Just saw this. Don't know what to tell you Ken. You mention adding PS to the list, I'm assuming that wasn't done before. How about the rest?

... I'm assuming you did all, and it looks like Marcia's up and running now, so you might try that first - although that shouldn't really matter if you did the above. There is a remote possibility that you have some parameter in brush dynamics in the brush palette that is set wrong, but I'm about tapped out on other ideas. At this point, I'd contact Adobe, since there are others that have CS and aren't having a problem.

Indeed hold the phone! Found out what my solution was. The eraser function will not work on the background layer. Once I added another layer it worked as was intended. Umm...yet another learning curve for Photoshop! I still wonder if it suppose to work that way?

Thanks for everyone's comments to guide me through different solutions....I really appreciate it!
